Set on the slopes of Signal Hill, the Bo Kaap has always been one of the most colourful Cape Town neighbourhoods, and not just because of its eclectic mixture of brightly hued cottages. This historical suburb is also known as the Cape Malay Quarter. The Bo Kaap was one of the few that escaped the forced removals during the Apartheid Era, which saw residents of other areas such as District Six being relocated to the Cape Flats or additional designated areas. Meaning ‘above the Cape’, the Bo Kaap today has retained much of its diverse culture and history.

Houses in the area are set high on steep cobbled streets, and boast a startling array of colours. Rows of cottages in vibrant pink, orange, green, red, turquoise and blue lie side by side with renovated homes next to old homes on the state of disrepair. Many of these houses have been owned by generations of families over the years, with grandparents, parents and children sharing the tiny cottages. Other houses have been snapped up by savvy property owners who have seen the value of the area, renovating the cottages with modern touches.

There is much more to this fascinating suburb of Cape Town than its cottages however, with many unique highlights to be found in the Bo Kaap.

Bo Kaap Highlights

Local residents comprise of Muslim and Cape Malay families, young professionals, media students, international expats and many other diverse crowds seeking a central Cape Town neighbourhood in the City Bowl area. Some of the well-known and lesser known attractions and highlights of the Bo Kaap area include the following:

Spice Market – on Whale Street, a large spice market is found, offering a wide assortment of spices and other flavoursome delights.

Mosques – the Bo Kaap is home to seven different Mosques, and in the evenings it is common to hear the Iman calling the start of prayers.

Craft Foods Market – on the first Saturday of each month, the Bo Kaap Craft Foods Market Day is held at the Schotschekloof Civic Centre on Upper Whale Street, with many delicious local delicacies to sample and purchase.

Bo Kaap Museum – housed at 71 Whale Street, the museum is furnished and restored to the 19th Century style of the area, with many documents and artefacts of the area and its history to be found.

Coon Carnival – on 2 January every year, the Bo Kaap and surrounding city comes to live with the annual Coon Carnival (also known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar). This event was originally celebrated by Muslim slaves who would enjoy their only day off of the year.

Bo Kaap Kombuis – for a taste of traditional Cape Malay cuisine such as curries, Bobotie, Sosati and other dishes, there are few better restaurants to try than the Bo Kaap Kombuis in August Street.

Kloof Street and Long Street are both within walking distance, while Green Point, De Waterkant and the Waterfront are also nearby. Along with historical landmarks, there are a few tiny street corner cafes, with more shops, banks, supermarkets and facilities nearby in the City Bowl. The Bo Kaap Neighbour Watch keeps crime at a fairly low level, with the CCID monitoring the suburb along with other neighbourhoods in the city area.

What sets the Bo Kaap aside from its neighbouring suburbs is its diverse blend of history, culture, food and people. With views of the city below and Signal Hill above the cobbled hills, the area has a unique charm that makes it one of the more popular areas in Cape Town for tours, accommodation, property or even a historical stroll.

<g:plusone href="http://www.daytours.co.za/blog/safaris/5-reasons-to-book-a-pilanesberg-safari/" size="standard" count="true"></g:plusone>

Situated just an hour and a half from Johannesburg, near the world famous Sun City resort, your Pilanesberg safari begins from the moment you enter the park. Rich in wildlife and birdlife, with a diversity of vegetation that ensures a unique environment, Pilanesberg National Park has become one of South Africa’s premier wildlife destinations for those wanting a memorable safari experience.

Pilanesberg Safari Highlights

From game drives to birding; photography to relaxation – your Pilanesberg safari is sure to be an experience you will remember for many years to come. Some of the top highlights of Pilanesberg include:

Game viewing – the rich, diverse ecosystems of Pilanesberg National Park supports a wide range of game. All of the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) along with Wild dog, brown hyena and many other endangered species. Game was reintroduced to this formerly wild region through a game relocation programme called Operation Genesis, ensuring the chance to view a diversity of wildlife. Game drives offer one of the best ways to spot game in the mornings and evenings, while the park also has many viewing areas from which you can see wildlife roaming below.

Unique environment – one of the most fascinating things you will see on your safari in Pilanesberg is the crater of a 1200 million year old extinct volcano. This crater is surrounded by three ridges, forming a natural amphitheatre. The park’s location between the Kalahari and Lowveld regions add even more beauty to the surroundings, with vegetation from both contrasting regions to be found. Free-roaming wildlife adds the final touch to this unspoiled haven for game, giving an ancient feel that makes Pilanesberg seem unspoiled by time.

Ideal location – less than two hours away from Johannesburg, near Sun City, you can enjoy a safari without the risk of malaria. The park is entirely malaria-free, which means no need for medication or worries during your safari. Spanning across 55 000 hectares of unspoiled vistas, the area has diverse habitats that range from rocky outcrops to open grasslands, wooded valleys and thickets. Photographic opportunities abound, so be sure to bring a camera and plenty of extra memory or film!

Bird watching – there are over 350 species of bird represented at Pilanesberg, with many migratory and endemic species. Birds of prey, water birds and forest bird species are found across the diverse habitats of the park, with species such as Red-eyed Bulbus and Black-eyed Bulbuls. There are many bird watching hides positioned throughout the park, along with picnic spots where it is safe to get out of your vehicle. During your safari however, you will need to stay in your vehicle until your guide permits you to do otherwise – dangerous game roams freely throughout the park.

While any time of year is ideal for a Cape Town tour, winter offers a different perspective of the Cape’s many natural and cultural wonders. The Cape has a mild climate, with marked seasons that each offer many highlights. Even in the middle of winter, it is not uncommon to experience warm summery days, and with much to see and do, Cape Town winters offer the perfect time to enjoy a tour of this popular travel region.

Some of the best ideas for Cape Town tours during winter include the following:

Cape Town Whale Watching Tours

The winter and spring months from June to November offer the ideal time to enjoy a Whale Watching Tour. During these months, many Southern right whales come to the coastal regions of the Cape such as Hermanus to breed and calve in the bays. A typical Whale Route Tour offers the chance to view whales from land and by boat, while learning more about the history of whaling in these waters as well as more information about the Southern right whale. This ensures a memorable day out in the scenic Garden Route hotspot of Hermanus.

Ocean Safari Tours

For those who wish to see the majestic Great white shark in its natural habitat, Ocean Safari Tours are excellent in winter. The cool waters of the Atlantic Ocean are warmer during the winter months, with excellent visibility also to be enjoyed on these Cape Town tours. This creates ideal conditions for those who wish to venture into the cage to get up close and personal with the often misunderstood predators of the deep.

Wine Tasting Tours

While these are just as excellent during the warm summer months, during the colder months you will also be able to enjoy all the warmth and cosiness of lunches in world-class wine estate restaurants, with fireplaces adding a rustic touch. Warming winter soups, award-winning red wine varietals and other such delicacies can all be enjoyed along with cellar tours, wine tasting and other activities that make these Cape Town tours a great choice during the cooler winter months.

Peninsula Tours

On clear winter days, Peninsula Tours can be enjoyed as a half or full day tour. The winter months, particular towards August, brings plenty of greenery across the peninsula, with many trees starting to get their first new leaves. Birding is also excellent during the winter months, with plenty of bird watching opportunities and photographic opportunities to enjoy.

Township Tours

Winter in Cape Town is especially hard for the communities living on the streets and in the townships found throughout the city. For visitors who wish to learn more about life in these areas, Township Tours offer a glimpse into the culture, traditions and way of life that is found in the townships. Visit a local school, sample delicious traditional beer, enjoy the vibrant atmosphere in a local shabeen (tavern) and see local dancers, entrepreneurs and more during a Cape Town tour of the townships.

For those who wish to see these majestic giants of the deep frolicking in the waves, a Cape Town Whale Route tour is not to be missed. Here are 5 good reasons to enjoy whale watching in Cape Town:

Land-based viewing – the town of Hermanus along the Whale Route offers the best opportunities for land-based viewing. Here you will find paths situated high on the cliff tops, and even a town whale crier who alerts bystanders when whales are spotted in the bay. While binoculars will offer a closer view, you will easily be able to see whales even without visual aids.

Boat viewing – you can also get up close and personal with whales with boat trips that bring you a bit closer to these magnificent marine mammals. Most tours along the Whale Route offer a chance to enjoy a boat trip, with exceptional ocean views and the chance to see a range of marine life alongside Southern right whales.

Whaling history – you will also have the chance to learn more about the history of whaling on your Cape Town Whale Route tour, to visit former whaling stations at Hermanus and learn more about the tragic methods used to hunt whales in previous years. This also offers more insight into the current endangered status of Southern right whales, whose numbers were greatly impacted by the whaling industry.

Coastal drives – en route to your whale viewing destination, you will have the chance to enjoy a drive along the beautiful stretch of Cape coastline. Dotted with wildflowers and mountains on one side, and the vast blue Atlantic Ocean on the other side, this drive is one of the most beautiful stretches of scenery in the Cape with plenty of rest points to stop and take pictures.

Hermanus sight-seeing – because no visit to Hermanus is the same without immersing yourself in the local sights and attractions, you will also get to visit other places of interest within the town. The pretty Harold Porter Botanical Gardens are a must-see, while ice-cream enjoyed in the town centre to the sound of local marimba bands offers the perfect way to wind down your thrilling Cape Town Whale Route tour.
